Compact 33: New and Old Configuration

The BLUM Compact 33 has changed.
About 12-15 years ago, BLUM switched their hinge design to the current configuration found on Cabinetparts.com (BH33.3600).

If you look at the current configuration and the older configuration side by side there are two (2) main things to look out for:

Current configuration for BLUM Compact 33
Two Main Things To Look Out For:

1) Degree of opening:
The current version of the Blum Compact 33 is a 110* opening hinge. It is marked with a 110 in 2 spots on the top of the hinge. The older discontinued version may have a 120 imprinted in the top of the hinge. If you have the 120* version, it is recommended that ALL hinges on any door the new version hinge is used on be switched over to the 110* version. Do not mix the old 120 hinge on the same door as the 110* version. Mixing degrees of opening will cause the hinge to fail quickly.

If you have different degrees of opening, but the same screw patten as the new version hinge, you can replace the hinges only. (See Below)

2) Screw hole location:
You can see the difference in the location of the mounting screw flanges on the hinges in the pictures above. The older version has the flat edge, where the wing tabs for the mounting screws are, running against the outside edge of the door. This means the pivot point for the swing arm is on the flat edge of the hinge where the 2 mounting screw tabs are. Your screw holes will be centered about 3/4" from the edge of the door.

The current version has the curved edge of the hinge running against the outside edge of the door. This means the pivot point for the swing arm is on the curved edge of the hinge, opposite the two(2) wing tabs for the screws. Your screw holes will be centered about 1" from the edge of the door.

If you have the older screw pattern, ALL hinges AND base-plates on each door you use the new hinge on should be replaced. You will have to re-drill mounting screws on the back side of the door for the new screw pattern. The old screw holes will not interfere with the new ones, but they will NOT be covered by the new hinge. Depending on which baseplate you have, you may also have to re-drill the screw holes on these parts also.

Follow the instructions below to your hinge replacement:
Your HINGE (part that attaches to the door) (BH33.3600) Is the Compact 33 series face frame hinge. Here is the link BH333600/
*(see Notes below)*

Your BASE - PLATE (part that attaches to the cabinet)

Look for 130 on the bottom followed by other numbers e.g. 214 or 115 or 216. These numbers will correspond to our part numbers BH130.2140.02 or BH130.1150.02 or BH130.2160, respectively. Exception: face mounting plate (BH133.0240) which screws into the face of your cabinet.

Match your plates only with numbers found on your existing plates, NOT by the picture. (Picture is only a representation of the plates)

Be sure to check the “Installation Hardware” link for screws, jigs and other accessories. If the hinge has an antique bronze (AB) finish, these are no longer available, but can be replaced with the nickel colored ones. They are not normally visible so it should not be a problem. If it is a problem, consider trading some that are the correct color from another cabinet which is not as critical.

HINGE NOTE #1

The hinge we sell is the current style of the 110 degree version of the hinge which will fit fine in most cases.

If yours say 120 (or if they appear any different from the pictured hinge) Make sure to change all hinges and base plates on each door needing replacements. Everything will work the same however possibly the two screw holes will not line up.

HINGE NOTE #2

The doweled version, BH33.3630, includes white plastic cylindrical inserts attached to the hinge which fit into the door where the mounting screws go. The BH33.3630 is used for high production lines where the doors are pre-bored with the larger holes to accept the inserts. If your hinges have the dowels but appear the same as the pictured ones, you will not need to order doweled hinges as they will attach in the same position and removing the existing dowels can cause damage to your door.
